I don’t like to dwell on my maker, it gives the illusion of power over me.

Elizabeth Bathory – The First Disruptor

Xavier debriefed me on the Scotland trip once I’d returned from my two-day integrity course. It had been interesting – if you enjoyed questioning every decision you ever made – and I’d got to say goodbye to Mandy at the impromptu after course drinks. I’d even won a tenner off Tristan in a game of pool. By all accounts, it had been a success. Both my pool playing and the Scotland trip.

I’d been a bit annoyed that the course had clashed with the trip, but Elizabeth had said she’d promised Newton, she’d keep me safe after the assassination attempt. And with all the sympathetic press, she was up in the polls, flying past the incumbent parties.

Elizabeth had attended several public events, made a great impression at all of them and won a significant number of Scottish MPs over to her VAMP party. Her chances of becoming PM had grown again – to forty per cent based on my calculations, although she was still an outsider.

I updated the charts with the latest data and checked the MPs’ names on the database along with adding a question mark to those Xavier thought could be swayed in time for the election. She was so close to having a significant proportion of parliament on her side, assuming they all got voted in again.

“Are you sure this is right?” I asked, swivelling my screen around so Xavier could see it. “It says all the candidates for Mid Fife and Glenrothes are defecting to VAMP.”

“Correct.”

“But they’re at different ends of the idealistic scale. That means, whoever gets in, Elizabeth’s party wins the constituency.”

“Correct. And the opposition for Argyll and Bute dropped out of the race so we’re guaranteed that spot.”

“Really?”

Xavier’s mouth turned down ever so slightly at the corners, but his voice was cool as he said, “Elizabeth was very persuasive.”

I could believe that. I updated my spreadsheet before switching my attention to preparing dossiers for the people Elizabeth would meet tonight. Google was my friend, but a quick email to Dedomena got me some interesting additional insights that I added into the files before sending them to Elizabeth.

She read them with vampiric speed. “Good work, Elle.” Elizabeth leaned back in her chair. “You’re doing very well here. I think it’s time you saw me in action. How do you feel about a visit to some constituencies? We’re going round the Southwest tomorrow for three days.”

“You want me there?” This was incredible. I hadn’t been on any campaign visits with Elizabeth since the disaster of the first one; my role was to stay back at base and update reports, check the polls and get the press team on any whiff of scandal so they could spin it. So far, one bloke had come forward claiming to be her love child, but it turned out he’d already claimed to be the love child of Cirian – the elf popstar – and the fae emperor, so we ignored him.
